Chlorine Gas leaks killed 8 people, 44 poisoned and in hospital! Who is RESPONSIBLE?

Nanotech identified the following risks to clients and industry and then developed a product to address these risks. The concept of “On-Site” manufacturing of dangerous gasses is not new to Nanotech, and we used our experience to finalise this invention to make the application safe.

Challenge No.1 

To reduce the risk in the transportation, handling and storing of liquid chlorine, gaseous chlorine, liquid chlorine derivatives like sodium hypo chloride and calcium hypo chloride.

Our Solution:

We solved this risk by transporting liquid chemicals that can be handled on site, minimising the handling thereof, contained in chemical holding tanks, bunded safely and secured.

Challenge No.2 

Significantly reduce the inventory of liquid and gaseous chlorine to be used in the process of disinfection. Minimum storage or capacity may be 70 kg of chlorine gas in a cylinder, and if connected to a manifold it will be multiples of these cylinders. If a 990 kg cylinder is in use, leakage from this cylinder will be full the content of the cylinder, 990 kg.  

Our Solution:

This is the biggest RISK for any application if something goes wrong. In our chemical process we have chlorine gas dissolved in water inside a reactor at maximum of 60 gram. It is a 1000 times lower inventory in mass of chlorine GAS. This is the single most important benefit regarding safety of chlorine gas leaking risk.

Challenge No.3 

Eliminate the manual intervention of these applications where there are a huge skills shortage and lack of supervision. Most of the application where chlorine gas in currently used is based on a manual interface between equipment and what the process really demands. It is always in a situation of over dosing or under dosing the required amount of chlorine gas needed for proper disinfection.

Our Solution:

Automating the technology based on the demand or requirement for chlorine or residual in process is a skill we at Nanotech mastered over the years. We have the Jesco analysers to measure ORP, PH, free chlorine or residual chlorine for effective disinfection. This is a standard offer that we combine with our technology.

Challenge No.4 

Reducing the capital cost for the installation and smaller footprint for the process equipment and chemical storage facilities.

Our Solution:

There is a huge and significant reduction and elimination of capital costs for a typical installation. The technology offered from Nanotech is condensed but also practical for maintenance procedures. Typical cost savings are realised from the building requirement, off loading facilities, extraction fans or scrubbing tower.

Challenge No.5

Service and technology support have deteriorated significantly the last few years from supply companies. Suppliers are faced with skill shortages as well as experience to advise clients and give the required advice where required.

Our Solution:

The concept of offering a complete “packaged service” is unique – where the equipment is packaged to manufacture the final product like chlorine. The system package offer controlling the process water pH within specified limits and managing supply and inventory of input chemicals. The Nanotech SLA agreement is compulsory to maintain the system and to deliver consistent quality of chlorine. A guaranteed uptime of at least 98%, with SIGNIFICANT reduced risk is the unique development from Nanotech.

Challenge No.6

Compliance to legislation SANS 10298:2009 is a complex and expensive exercise to comply to all the requirements listed.
