What is the difference between microbes and enzymes? 

The correctly chosen microbial strain can produce enzymes. Enzymes can’t reproduce themselves but rely on microbes for their existence. Enzymes act like catalysts in the breakdown of waste. Their activity depends on the shape of the enzyme fitting to the shape of the waste in the reaction (very specific). The microbes detect what is the contaminant present, and within its capability, produces the required enzymes, which breaks down the contaminant, to a more biodegradable level. The microbes then digest the contaminant further.

Would I still need to pump out the septic tank when dosing microbes?

The septic tank is designed to catch all the solids coming from the drains, biodegradable and non-biodegradable as well. You will still need to pump out the septic tank from time to time, but it will be at a reduced frequency, leading to reduced costs.

Why is the issue of drain line blockage and backups (overflows) important?

Push back from the drains can release disease-causing bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens into your house and living environment. It is also aesthetically not pleasant. Thus, public health, safety and welfare can be jeopardized.

Are there local limits/regulations for septic tanks?

The Septic Tanks shall be designed in accord with SABS 0252 Part 2 or CSIR Report BOU93 of Nov 1996 for the calculated ADWF subject to the following requirements of DPW:

a) The capacity of the tank shall not be less than 3x ADWF

b) The minimum design de-sludging capacity shall not be less than 5 years. c) The tank shall have at least two compartments.

Please check regularly for updates/changes to the legislation, as well as your local by-laws, when installing a new system.

How can I ensure that my septic tank will work effectively?

 Your septic tank is properly sized, installed, and maintained as well as the actions mentioned above:

  • Limit the use of harsh chemicals.
  • Avoid drain cleaners and oxidative chemicals.
  • Implement a bioaugmentation regime.

How can I tell if it is working?

If you do not experience any of the problems mentioned above, then your system is okay.

What happens to the microbes that are transferred downstream with the septic tank discharge?

They will continue to work and degrade organics in the soakaway.
